Ruta Maya

About a year ago while I was riding with my buddies in Durango, Co. We started thinking about where to go next. I opened my big mouth and said, lets go to Alaska or Mexico. Ohhh, I should have not said it because I got everybody excited.

Working has disadvantages: Vacation time! Usually means 2 weeks a year. Alaska was out of the question. Maybe in a distant future. But Mexico? Well its our neighbor, only a day away from the metroplex and I speak the language.

I started to crank out the trip but since I love traveling, the spirit on me had to make a real adventure out of it. In January of 2008 I came to the conclusion that I had to do the “Ruta Maya”. This meant visiting the most important mayan ruins in Central America. Palenque in Mexico, Tikal in Guatemala, Copan in Honduras and Caracol in Belize.

In the plan I had the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico but I asked around to see if I could do this trip in 2 weeks. Most of the people said yes but you are going to haul ass. I started taking this trip more seriously and I asked at work if I could take 3 weeks off. It didn’t seem to be an issue. Now I have 21 days. But the more I looked at the map, it really look like I had to cut something out. I have been in the Yucatan before and in Chichen Itza. I figure that if I ever wanted to go there again it will be easier to go by plane or boat. The other places where far reach so the decision was made.

I started asking question and getting all the information I could compile. I bought maps, books, read ride reports and surfed the net. I invited a few friends to come along but being such a long trip and “scary” I didn’t expect for anybody to make it. But suddenly, the four amigos were on again and for an adventure of a lifetime.

As tiem when on I did research not only on the locations, but on basic maintenance for my bike. I needed to do it on my own, not only to save money but to familiarize with the bike and its components. I also added some upgrades as well.
